On a dank, glum 45° New Year’s Day afternoon in the town of Vienna, VA, a bunch of kids were playing on Water Caffi Fields, the main athletic area of the Town Recreation Department. They had leather gloves, a couple of round, white baseballs, and some bats which one can only hope were ash rather than (ugh) maple, (ugh, ugh) aluminum, or (ugh, ugh, ugh) composite. Yes, I know that the coldest part of the winter may lie ahead. But if they can play ball, I can ride my bike, and we’ll all be doing it in the warm sun soon enough. Swing, batter!
